The infrared thermometer is an instrument used to measure temperature without contact, simply through the use of infrared radiation emitted by a body.
Equipped with a pilot light beam for better orientation, the infrared thermometer can only measure the external temperature of visible surfaces and does not work through glass.
Infrared thermometer: Operation
Generally used to measure the temperature of children in case of fever, the infrared thermometer can be used to measure materials such as wood paper, metal surfaces, etc. The most frequent use is to measure the temperature of newborns since the axillary one is uncomfortable, takes too long, and is not precise.
Infrared technology, on the other hand, allows the thermometer to detect fever in 1 second, and if the temperature is too high, it is communicated by an acoustic signal.
Using it is simple: just press the power button, bring the thermometer closer to the forehead at a distance of 1/2″ – 2″ and press the button. In addition to measuring body temperature, it can also be used to measure the temperature of baby food and baby bath.
To perform a correct measurement, you need to follow 2 simple rules:
- Correct distance from the object to be measured – The minimum distance to perform the measurement is 1″, but it varies according to the optical resolution of the sensor. This must be chosen based on the size of the object and the distance between the object and the sensor. Choosing the wrong lens leads to significant temperature differences.
- Type of material on which the measurement is made – The infrared thermometer that is used must have an emissivity coefficient suitable for the material on which the measurement is made, which depends on the color and opacity of the surface of the material.
Infrared thermometer: important features
On the market, there are infrared thermometers of 2 types, ear and front or remote. The infrared front thermometer is also called the remote infrared thermometer, as it is sufficient to point towards the forehead of the sick subject to measure temperature in a very short time. Simple to use, it is widely used in the home and is also available in the contact version.
This second type works the same way only that it should be placed instead of pointing towards the forehead. The infrared ear thermometer should instead be placed inside the oracle, and this detects the temperature in two seconds. The latest generation models of both types are equipped with other features to be taken into consideration at the time of purchase:
- The history of the surveys.
- The possibility of measuring both in degrees Celsius and degrees Fahrenheit.
- The presence of an LED light that allows you to use the thermometer even in the dark.
- Automatic shutdown if not in use.
