How to choose the right foundation for your skin is one of the fundamental steps to get good make-up. It often happens that women are unable to choose the one best suited to their skin, also because the market offers an extensive variety of products, and often it is really complex to find the foundation that best suits your needs.

How to choose the right foundation in the midst of an infinite number of types?
There are different types of foundation to be carefully evaluated based on the characteristics of your skin:
- Compact cream foundation: surely, it is the one that guarantees the greatest coverage, especially when there are stains and discolorations; it is not suitable for those with oily skin because its formulation is mainly lipid.
- Compact powder foundation: composed of powder pigments, it can be used both dry and wet (using a previously moistened sponge), but it is not recommended for dry skin because it would tend to increase dryness.
- Mineral foundation: composed of natural powders, it guarantees a light and homogeneous coverage, lately it has been the most-used product thanks to the absolutely natural effect that it is possible to obtain.
- Fluid foundation: probably the most common type, it has different compositions that adapt to all types of skin (normal, oily or dry).
How to choose the foundation? The error to be avoided
The most common mistake when choosing a foundation is to think that it serves to change the color of one’s skin (make it darker for a tan effect or make it lighter for a porcelain effect). Actually buying a darker one risks darkening imperfections, making them more visible, while a lighter one will give the effect of the ” wax mask “.
The real goal of this product is to make the complexion uniform, so the color should be as similar as possible to the natural color of the skin, otherwise it will create discrepancies between the face and the neckline.
It is necessary to understand, what is the color of our skin?
We have two factors to analyze :
- The undertone (i.e., the color that predominates).
- Tonality (color concentration).
As regards the first aspect, we have three gradations :
- Pinkish (northern skins)
- Golden (Mediterranean skins)
- Neutral (skin of Caucasian populations, a middle ground between the previous two)
For pink skins, a foundation with a porcelain or pink shade is recommended; for golden skins, the best shades are those caramel or hazel; for neutral skin, instead, you should opt for an ivory or beige shade.

To try the product it is not necessary to spread it, as many believe, on the back of the hand, but on the area between the jaw and the neck, blending it with light tapping with the fingertip; sometimes it may happen that you have to mix two different foundations, one lighter and one darker, to find the shade that best suits our color.
