Fitness bracelets: How they are made
As often happens with products of a new category, the main manufacturers have copied each other a little. So the models of the various brands are a bit like each other: the bracelets are always light and ergonomic, the design is essential and comfortable specially created to forget to wear it on the wrist.
Most models are obviously waterproof. At first glance, they look like normal colored and rubber digital wrist watches: in conditions of physical inactivity, the central display shows the time in a digital format.
Unlike classic digital watches, the display of fitness bracelets is not square or round, but, generally, long and narrow: in short, the display does not come out of the strap, but its width is the same as the strap. In summary, the size of the display varies from 0.5 to 1 inch with LCD technology.
The most advanced models have real back-lit and/or color displays, others are simpler and cheaper, a simple liquid crystal display without lighting. The bracelets are generally powered by rechargeable batteries or long-life lithium-ion batteries, easily replaceable once they are exhausted.
How do they work?
Is this the first time you are in front of a fitness bracelet? No fear. Once you open the package, all you have to do is put it on your wrist, and the bracelet will immediately start to monitor your sport and other activities. You need to synchronize it with a PC or Mac using the required application depending on the type of bracelet you buy (usually Mysfit or Garmin Connect). Better still, if you combine it with a smartphone with its app! Synchronization can be done either via Bluetooth or via the USB socket on the bracelet.
All movements and progress of the day will be stored in the memory of the bracelet and will be downloaded each time you are connected to the application on your PC or smartphone. If the daily memory cannot be downloaded, the bracelet will store the data for up to one month of use for 24 hours a day.
In some models, to display the time, just touch the display, while if you strip your finger, other information appears. Before going to see the main functions in detail, we would like to give you some advice that is not to bring the watch to the main arm: that is to say if you are left-handed, we advise you to take it to the right.
The main functions of fitness bracelets
Let’s get to the heart of the features of fitness bracelets.
- Pedometer: in our opinion, absolutely reliable. This works counts the steps that have been taken during the day, and once the result is checked, you will be amazed at how many steps we take during the day.
- Distance traveled: the bracelet will calculate the distance you have traveled during the day. Unfortunately, not having the integrated GPS, at the end of the calculation, there is a small discrepancy between the real distance and that detected by the bracelet. The distance covered by the step is automatically calculated by the system after having previously entered the person’s height and pace.
- Calories consumed: by entering the characteristics of the person, the bracelet will automatically calculate the calories consumed. The data used for the calculation are steps taken, distance covered, and the person’s structure.
- Sleep monitoring: it is important to never remove the bracelet because the person’s sleep status is also checked. Some models are able to control this activity more thoroughly, but most of them record the phases of sleep considered to be deeper than the lighter and more agitated ones.
- Motivator: in our opinion, an interesting function present on some models is precisely this, the motivator. When no physical activity is practiced for a predetermined period (eg greater than 15 minutes), a red band begins to appear, which reaches its peak after 2/3 hours of bodily inactivity. To make the red band disappear, just walk a little or take a few steps, and the band will begin to disappear again. In some models, in addition to the red band, there are sound or vibration warnings to enhance the visual effect. Furthermore, every day a target is set to be reached based on the data of the previous day, such as the number of steps and the activity performed. It is also possible to set some personal goals based on your physical activity. In addition, daily trophies are displayed each time the proposed goal is reached.
- Heart-rate monitor: some models can be purchased with the heart-rate monitor to control the heart rate by setting your BMP either at rest or at a maximum effort. The display will provide the current BMP and sports activity aimed at your interests.
- Alarm clock and notifications: some models are equipped with an alarm clock and receive notifications regarding both calls and SMS, WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, Skype, by a visual warning on the display and vibration on the wrist. Very useful, for example: while jogging.
